Episode 24: From One Hell to Another (Part 3)
Mark was nowhere in sight now leaving the two of us. Two broken souls alone in Toyland with the mutilated body of David Sharpe staring back at us. It took everything in me not to puke or scream. As I stood there trying to make the room stop spinning and my mind from going mad, I saw Audrey retreat to the other side of the room staring out the window. She sat down seeming oddly calm.

“Audrey?” I called out to her coming closer. “Are you…are you ok?”

“No! I’m not ok,” she whimpered. Nothing is ok!”

I reached out to her to comfort her but she recoiled scowling at me. “Don’t! Just don’t! I don’t even know who you are! Who are you? I didn’t even know you were in jail until tonight!”

"I was planning to tell you that earlier…”

“Were you?!” she fumed turning her back to me. “You had plenty of time to tell me! To think I slept soundly while you and that man could have done anything to me! That body could have easily been me….”

“I would have never hurt you, Audrey! Never!” I pleaded. “Please. I’ll tell you everything. At least hear me out. Please!”
As the storm raged on, I spilled my guts to her. I told her everything. From the day I was arrested to the day of the outbreak at the prison. Even some of the crimes from before. Her silence was both frightening and oddly comforting. Her face a mask of anger and fear. She stared blankly at me after I was done. There was still a coldness about her, but she seemed to accept what I said as she nodded. She then slowly sank to the floor closing her eyes and relaxing a bit, but keeping her distances.
Morning came quickly after our little chat. Mark never came back and Audrey nodded off to my relief. I tried my hardest to stay awake, but as the sun began to set I fell my eyelids grow heavy and regrettably I fell asleep. When I awoke Audrey was gone and strange noises echoed throughout the room. I turned around to the window realizing the sound was behind me never imagining what I would see. A sea of corpses staring back at me. Groaning, clawing, and banging on the large windows. Their hideous decomposing faces watching me hungrily. Some far as the eye could see. I could literally feel the color drain from my face as my eyes settled on the sight.
“Pretty bad ain’t it?” Mark quipped as he suddenly appeared. He then aimed his shotgun at me. “Now tell where’s your little friend, Audrey? Where is she? Where are you hiding her?!”

“What?”

Mark roared, “That bitch stole from me! She took my bag. My food. My supplies.”

“Supplies? I thought you said you just found medical supplies, matches, and water. Where the fucking food come from? You’ve been holding out on us?!” I accused jumping to my feet. “David said as much…when he was alive.”

“Woa Woa. Remember I have the gun,” he boasted pointing it again against my chest. “Maybe I did. Not my fault you decided to play nurse for that girl rather than search for supplies yourself. Maybe you should get your priorities straight.”

“Sorry. I tend to think about others more than myself. Maybe you should try it you sick fuck.”
“There you go judging again. Remember when we promised each other not to delve into each other’s offenses or past? Not that I care about what you think about me now,” he scoffed. “All I want is the girl and my bag. I have a feeling you know where she is. Tell me or I swear I’ll…”

“What? Kill me like David? I don’t know where she is and if I did I wouldn’t tell you. Hell, you probably did something to her to make her leave!”

“You know I use to like you, but you really wore out your welcome and use. Shit. I only kept you around, because you were too stupid to notice I stole your portions,” he chuckled.  He aimed the gun at my head. “Now one last time. Where is she? Any idea?”

“Fuck you! Your days of hurting women are over. If I knew I wouldn’t let you near her, so fuck off.”

He pulled the trigger with lightning speed. I closed my eyes as my feet began to move in the opposite direction fully expecting to be hit, but the sound of clicking was all I heard. I turned around to see a bewildered Mark checking the chamber for bullets. I rushed forward grabbing him and pushing him violently towards the window. The force shook the very pane and cracked it sending the dead into a frenzy.
Mark laughed, “Guess I used my last bullet on that fucking cop! Either that or that bitch stole my bullets. You know you could really learn something from her, Vince. Even she’s more ruthless than you! She definitely has bigger balls than you!”

I punched him and he spat in my face. We dropped to the ground tussling. The dead as spectators as they scratched and scraped against the fragile glass. Neither of us exhibiting human attributes ourselves. We were two animals out to kill. Blood covering our faces as we clawed at each other like barbarians. Nothing could stop us. Once I got him pinned down I punched and I punched feeling nothing. Then I heard a voice.

“Vince? Oh…oh god.”
I looked up to see Audrey standing there instead dressed in a blood-covered jean jacket. She backed away staring at me as if I was a monster.

“You…you came back,” I cried climbing to my feet.

“Oh, ain’t that damn sweet. Now I can kill you both and be done with it,” the other man grimaced trying lift himself up.

“You’re in no shape to kill anyone,” Audrey said eyeing him. “You’re done.”

“Seems so. Your boy’s a good fighter. Guess it’s time to answer for my sins, but you know I have no regrets. Not a single one. Those whores deserved it.” He then laughed, “You think I’m bad. No, just you wait. I’m a puppy compared to what’s left out there! People like me we survive. We adapt. People like you are prey!”

He then roared with laughed and like an answer from the gods, I could hear glass shattering. Then the dead entered the room like a stampede. All ghastly and hungry for flesh.

“No…no NOOOO! Wait!” Mark screamed as they surrounded him as if the dinner bell had been rung.

I grabbed my machete as a crowd of them turned their attention to me. I looked back seeing nothing, but living corpses. No Audrey in sight. Lost in the crowd I assumed. Then a hand reached out to me. Her hand. Audrey’s. I starred at it stunned.
“What a fucking dick! Well, take my hand. We need to get you covered,” she said. “In their blood remember? Come on! Let’s go!”
